For the scale project, my group and I decided to replicate a tube of toothpaste. The materials involved in this project included: wire, packing peanuts, bubble wrap 2 shower curtains, spray paint, gloss and poster board. We assembled the frame with the wire, placed the packing peanuts in it, covered it with bubble wrapped, then covered that with two shower curtains (they were somewhat transparent for we needed two), spray painted “Colgate” on the front, pasted the details/instructions on the back and assembled a cap out of poster board. The toothpaste was also rolled up to give it the appearance that it was used.

For the color project, my running theme was the use of cartoon elephants  There are 6 box representing 6 different color schemes. They are: analogous, monochromatic, secondary color composition, primary color composition, intermediate color composition and complementary. So to represent these color schemes (which involved 2-3 colors) I had the elephant’s outline was one color and the background was the 2nd and sometimes 3rd color. I used acrylic paint and Bristol paper to complete this project.

The “Girl with the Pearl Earring” was one of Vermeer’s masterpieces which had coined names such as, “the Mona Lisa of the North” and “the Dutch Mona Lisa”. This painting represents an interesting concept called the golden rectangle. This is where the lengths of the painting are in the golden ratio, one-to-phi, that is, approximately 1:1.618. Essentially, this creates a spiral that
can be repeating into infinity! Woah.

Since my theme dealt with isolation, I wanted to have one focal point, “a person” to be the representative of being isolated. My curvilinear project depicts the outdoors with rolling hills and open skies. In the far right lower corner is a man standing on the edge of a cliff.

For this project, I begun with cutting out the foot hill by tracing the ones I had sketched on the paper and applying that to the green paper. After that was done, I took the lightest blue paper I had and made that the sky (cutting a portion off, seeing as I didn’t have enough sky to space the whole page). Then I cut out other blue designs to pattern the sky. Then I cut out the cliff and placed it in the corner .

I learned that mistakes/brief incidents of inspiration are good, and that making them can help improve your project and can place the final touches on it.

In my rectilinear project, I wanted to present isolation by showing how one person is isolated from others. I made it appear that a group of people are in one room, and in the other is the lonesome person. The other people are also grey, showing that they are away and in the background.

For this project, I wanted the “person” to appear isolated, so I made him appear as if he was entering another room of some sort. I drew around 45 angles around the 4 corners of the picture. Then I took paper and created walls, a ceiling and a floor. For the negative space left over I just used white paper. As I glued all those down, I put and pasted rectangular figures to represent people. The people were place on the negative space to show that they were separated from the person of isolation (I also made a “person” out of yellow paper to show that he was different). Then to complete it, I placed 4 “windows” to show that the person was in an enclosed space.

During this project, I learned that a point can be driven through simplicity. I didn’t use to much detail, but I believe it still is very effective in communicating my theme.

On Wednesday’s VCAR 113 class, we were given the assignment to explain the concept of line and why it is so crucial in design. For fun we played “pictionary” on the white board which allowed us to use line for ourselves. It’s interesting for me, because the idea of “line” is so elementary that I feel like I have to take a step backwards in order to observe it. The mere shape of a line can represent something: flow, feeling, etc. Line also forms well … forms; simple and basic, and sometimes that’s all you need to express an idea. Line also creates movement –  like the leg example from the game. The picture of the leg by itself wouldn’t have been suffice, but my team member drew two lines behind it, giving it the appearance of movement. So from there, no longer was it just a leg, but a kick (our team got that one, yay!). Therefore, line is crucial because it’s essentially the building block of art and design. Could you imagine a world without line? I couldn’t

Hi world, this is me, Annie Gifford I’m from Newtown Square, Pennsylvania and I attend Liberty University with a major in Graphic Design.

I guess my answer to “what I want to be when I grow up” is to graduate college and to get involved in advertising with my degree in Graphic Design. Whenever God blesses me with a family, I would like to free lance so I can stay at home and be a Mom

I’m inspired by different things I observe around me; nature, architecture, etc. I also see what other artists do with their art and gain ideas there.

I’m looking forward to our VCAR113 class because I want to learn how to be able to discuss/critique design intelligently, the aesthetics involved, and how to improve myself in the area of design!

My college vice is procrastination, so I think my biggest challange will be turning everything on time.  I’m praying I will!
